Leap and the net will unfold, a good friend said to me, and it was true. Not just in that moment when I decided to leave my permanent job to opt for the unknown because I just wasn’t happy anymore, but in many moments since then. Leaping and most often landing on my feet. The new perspective needed to do this and get unstuck has continued to make me richer. I am trusting more that I will find my feet, and started to look at my experiences differently. Before I asked myself, what can this moment or person offer or teach me? But I often forgot to ask what I have to offer or teach as well. I appreciate situations more, even if they don’t seem so perfect when they appear.
Feeling more peaceful and purposeful, I notice so many people around me going through the same process. And consequently choosing professions that make them happier and are much more beneficial for the world. This to me signifies an amazing transformation happening. It made me wonder about the the nature of change, and how we can better facilitate positive transformation for humanity.
Inspiring Each Other To Change
I made the next leap from freelancing to studying and traveling in South America. And even though I am working in London again, this is a new phase in a new journey. Even if I don’t know where it’s leading yet. Interestingly, I am now surrounded by a lot of friends in the same space of change. Mostly coming from corporate careers such as investment marketing, political campaigning, business development, experience design, cyber security, and so on. Now, we are opening our horizons, we are looking for something meaningful, something we can poor our heart into, and that will benefit the world. We feel the need to express all dimensions of our personality, not just our intellect. In the last 2 years an impressive amount of friends is taking this leap..
I am not even mentioning all the people I’ve met traveling in South America, and new friends at Schumacher College and the EDE course at Findhorn. Mostly we don’t know exactly where we are heading yet, but we’re quite comfortable in the unknown. Needless to say I am so proud and inspired by all of them. But why is this happening for all of us now? Yes, we are mostly in our 30s, no children, corporate jobs, living in a large city. And of course we attract likeminded people, and inspire each other to change. But additionally, I like to think the world as a whole is in transformation and it is needed that we step up to our responsibilities.
The Nature Of Change
One way of looking at the changes in worldview that are happening around us comes from eco philosopher Thomas Berry who introduced the idea of the old and new story. As humanity we know the old story doesn’t work and we don’t yet know exactly what the new story is. We do know that we are moving from fear based competition, to peaceful cooperation, from individualism and separation, to community and wholeness. From scarcity and greed, to abundance and generosity. From power over to power with.
Additionally Spiral Dynamics offers a good model of change in human development. On an individual level, it explains the nature of change as cyclical, and appearing in various phases. Alpha is a time of balance, Beta the time of doubt and anxiety. Gamma is the hardest part, where problems are clear, but solutions are not. Yes, this is where you may be feeling miserable and stuck. At Delta, well, that’s where there is a breakthrough moment of change. Delta is the leap that takes you to the sweet spot of the new Alpha, which can be through evolutionary or revolutionary change. If Delta is the state of change and inspired enthusiasm, I imagine that’s where most people around me are close to in this moment.
Spiral dynamics is a very comprehensive theory that tries to explain what meaning making systems societies develop, and why they change over the years. As our problems change, our consciousness changes to address those conditions of increased complexity. It looks at the different cultural values in societies, and how they change over time. Such as from clan and tribal, to authoritarian structures, strategic enterprise, and holistic organisms. It can help us make sense of, and amplify, transformation.
Take The Leap
The point is, if you are struggling with uneasiness, uncertainty, and challenging life changes, these are not happening separate from the world. Eventually, you will be changing perspective on your own life, as much as on the world you live in. Beyond feeling limited by the systems in place, you can start seeing the exciting alternatives for yourself – and humanity. And when you are in your ‘new Alpha’, you become a co-creator of those new alternatives. If you dare to take the leap, unexpected and beautiful things await for you and our world. And that is what we need, more then anything.
Turn on your light, by Ben Okri
The new era is already here:
Here the new time begins anew.
The new era happens every day,
Every day is a new world,
A new calendar.
All great moments, all great eras,
Are just every moment
And every day writ large.
Thousands of years of loving, failing, killing,
Creating, surprising, oppressing,
And thinking ought now to start
To bear fruit, to deliver their rich harvest.
Will you be at the harvest,
Among the gatherers of new fruits?
Then you must begin today to remake
Your mental and spiritual world,
And join the warriors and celebrants
Of freedom, realisers of great dreams.
You can’t remake the world
Without remaking yourself.
Each new era begins within.
It is an inward event,
With unsuspected possibilities
For inner liberation.
We could use it to turn on
Our inward lights.
We could use it to use even the dark
And negative things positively.
We could use the new era
To clean our eyes,
To see the world differently,
To see ourselves more clearly.
Only free people can make a free world.
Infect the world with your light.
Help fulfill the golden prophecies.
Press forward the human genius.
Our future is greater than our past.
